On Friday, Alfa Sauber officially published the names of the members of its Formula 1 junior team. Almost no stone was left unturned.
Théo Pourchaire is the only driver who will remain on board after 2022. The Frenchman will be joined by three newcomers.
Among them is a German, namely Taym Saleh, who is only 13 years old. Saleh has so far been active in karting and will probably remain so due to existing age limits in European formula racing. In 2022 he took part in the World Karting Championships in the OK Junior class, where the driver from Viernheim in Hesse finished 18th.

“I’m proud to have been accepted into the Sauber Academy and grateful for their support. Several drivers have worked their way up the ranks at Sauber Motorsport and made their debut there. It is a goal of mine to be there in the future. It is a great honor that they have seen the potential in me and want to invest in my future,” Saleh said of his signing.
In contrast, Theo Pourchaire is at a completely different stage of his career. For years, the Frenchman has been regarded as Sauber’s most promising homegrown driver, and in 2022 he finished second in Formula 2. Nevertheless, Guanyu Zhou was again given the nod in the Formula 1 driver selection for this year, instead of putting the youngest F2 winner in history alongside Valtteri Bottas.
First woman in the Sauber Academy
From 2023, a woman will also officially be part of the Sauber junior program for the first time. This is the Swiss driver Lena Bühler. Bühler will start in the women-only F1 Academy series in 2023. She is already competing this year in the F4 Series in the United Arab Emirates, where she has so far failed to score any points. Between 2021 and 2022 she also competed in the regional European Formula 3, where the 25-year-old also failed to score any points.
The fourth member of the junior squad is Finnish-French dual national Marcus Amand. The 17-year-old competed in Italian Formula 4 and ADAC F4 in 2021 and 2022 and collected a total of two podium finishes in these two series. The announcement of these four drivers also means that Roberto Faria is no longer part of the junior squad. The Mexican will compete in Formula 3 for the first time in 2023.
